YOUR FAMILY AND COLLECTING, DO IT TOGETHER

Everyone knows that in today's society the family has been deteriorating. Don't take my word for it all you have to do is read the newspaper or watch the news. The family is no longer what it used to be. Many families no longer eat together, play together or spend time together as together as a family. The reason is simple, we all have our own lives. For example, dad works long hours , mom works long hours and manages to keep the household in order, Susie has band practice, cheerleading, drama club, and track; Billie has to play basketball and work part time after school.
The solution is simple too. Besides one of the parents being a stay at home parent and actually being involved with their children and spending valuable time with their children, parents can set time aside with their children and enjoy being together. This is not a concept. Children who spend quantity and quality time with their parents will grow up to be confident, and productive citizens. To spend time with your children may take some working on if you must have a two family income but it can be done. A good example of this can be my own childhood. My father who had been divorced and remarried had parental rights for my brothers and myself. He was a construction worker and worked usually not less than twelve hours a day. One of the most important things I remember most is that after he got home, not only did he eat supper with us and watch tv with us, but he actually spent some quality time together. The way he did this was very simple. He had a huge jar of change that he would bring out and dump on the living room floor. He would have us all take a handful and start looking at the dates of the coins to see if we could find any silver coins, wheat pennies, buffalo nickels, etc. and we got to keep what we found. While we did this, he would ask us about our day, school, homework, problems and so on. He would also tell us what he was doing at work and often times show us pictures. This type of interaction went on for several years.
Here is the end result. Even though I came from a broken home, a mothers abusive boyfriend, and being moved around like a piece of property I have not only become a productive member of society, but I have also become the author of this article. My college days in which I am still attending has provoked the best in me and I am excelling as a student and a member of our college's national honor society. Am I proud? Yes I am. Am I bragging? No, but because my parent remained a part of my life and provide me with some much needed guidance, I turned out ok. The funny thing about it is that this all because of a bottle of change and the start of my collecting a great coin collection.
Parents, I plead with you, spend more time with your children. the coins I collected were from my dads pocket change. A very inexpensive hobby that has helped me to develop into the person I am today. Get involved with your children and you will provide them with not only a lifetime of memories, but provide them a life that will make you proud of them and even better thatn that, they will be proud of themselves.
